Surrounded by the sea of blood,
feet are still,
heart in turmoil.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
breathing heavily,
heavily.

One, two, three,
four, five, six.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
one shallow breath for each life lost,
for every dream ended.

Eleven, twelve, thirteen,
fourteen, fifteen, sixteen.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
one deep breath for each love lost,
for every loss revoked.

Forty-six, forty-seven, forty-eight,
forty-nine, fifty, fifty-one.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
one gasped breath for each insult recalled,
for every numbing degradation thrown to the wind.

Ninety-eight, ninety-nine, one hundred,
one hundred and one, one hundred and two, one hundred and three.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
one choked breath for each proverbial arrow yanked away,
for every open wound that remained.

One thousand one hundred and eighty-three, one thousand one hundred and eighty-four, one thousand one hundred and eighty-five,
one thousand one hundred and eighty-six, one thousand one hundred and eighty-seven, one thousand one hundred and eighty-eight….

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
knife in hand once shaking, now still.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
I smile, heart is calm.

Surrounded by the sea of blood,
Bloodied knife makes its way to my heart.

I smile.
